REDAN
Mexico, Canada, and the United States form the North American region. Ever since NAFTA came into effect in 1994, they have created one of the most competitive and dynamic economic platforms in the world; along with this, social movements and culture, as well as their regional impact, are part of what drives our research interests. Our ongoing challenge is to question our knowledge to acquire a better understanding of different phenomena involving these three countries and the ever-changing world.
Because of this, along with the need to join forces to socialize existing research results and share the experiences of scholars of the topic as well as to integrate different national and international sectors of society, we are organizing this Network of Researchers on North America to encourage dialogue and inter-institutional collaboration.
About us
We are a group of researchers specialized in a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach to issues involving the North American region. Our objective is to create a space for dialogue to compare different experiences, analyze and discuss new methodological approaches and epistemological positions, exchange publications, organize joint academic activities that allow all of us to deepen our knowledge about North America, and make our research visible to contribute to the education of new human resources and have an impact on public policies.
Goals and objectives
- To encourage the exchange of knowledge by organizing a Biannual Congress on North American Studies.
- To formulate mechanisms for disseminating knowledge about North America from the point of view of the social sciences and the humanities.
- To foster the creation of collective, interdisciplinary, and inter-institutional projects for innovating in the field of studies about North America.
- To position ourselves as a reference point regarding information exchange and dissemination of national and international academic activities, as well as for the publications produced in different places.
- To link up with other national and international academic networks, as well as with governmental institutions and social movements.
Lines of Inquiry
-
1. Security and governability
This line of inquiry involves the analysis of new threats to North American security, as well as the governance styles of the three states involved.
-
2. Economic processes, integration, and development
The network invites members to cover all the factors that influence the economy. This includes, for example, trade, which requires an updated analysis of the political tensions caused by the renegotiation of the USMCA, and the nationalist stance of the United States; the need for diagnostic analyses and interpretations of the national economies and the impact of technological and sectoral transformations; and the study of innovation and technological changes, particularly in those cutting-edge sectors now entering the market. Among other relevant topics are regional development in North America due to the subnational entities’ performance related to their own economic specializations; the digital economy and its impact on trade, production, and employment; or, the emerging creative and cultural industries whose presence and participation are currently on the rise.
-
3. Migration and borders
This line of inquiry deals with the study of trans-border movements, human mobility, management of borders by governments and other actors, and internal and regional migration.
-
4. Identity and cultural processes
All topics and concerns involving identity and cultural processes: contemporary theoretical, methodological, and epistemological debates surrounding the region’s cultural and social phenomena; art production (the visual and performing arts, literature, music, and film), as well as manifestations of popular culture (comics, social media content [Facebook, Instagram, YouTube], popular music, etc.); national and transnational cultural practices and identity processes in cyberspace. The great diversity of the region’s cultural practices crosses paths with the formation and transformations of identities that pose new ideological blueprints, ethnicities, gender identities, and manifestations of sexuality, an area of research that we intend to place in this line of inquiry. We welcome the introduction of research materials about the dynamics of contemporary cultures and their historic precedents in various spatial scales (corporal, intimate spaces, neighborhoods, cities, regions, nations, transnational spaces) in different contexts (consumption, production, teaching, entertainment) from diverse social groups (age, gender, social class), and from multiple disciplinary approaches.
-
5. Social actors, structures, and processes
This area deals with research projects that study the official and non-official social actors who determine social change in North America. It also includes the networks and institutions that shape the three societies that are part of this region (the Mexican, U.S., and Canadian societies) and those who promote cultural, social, and educational policies.
-
6. Ideas and political institutions
This research area focuses on the dissertations that originated the functioning of political systems in North America, as a necessary means of rethinking and identifying the areas of opportunity that the two oldest democracies in the Western Hemisphere (the United States and Canada) offer. The aim is to reconsider the democratic nature of both models and to reaffirm our understanding of the exclusionary tendencies that their elites perpetuate.
By-laws
-
Operation and functioning of REDAN
The Network of Researchers on North American is a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote cooperation among academic and non-academic researchers through educational, scientific, and cultural activities related to the region of North America.
-
Selection of the Executive Committee
To optimize REDAN’s functioning, the proposal is to elect a group of five academics to be responsible for making decisions for a period of two years; as an extraordinary measure, two of the members of the first executive committee will be allowed to continue as members of the committee for two consecutive two-year periods. Elections will take place every two years to replace three members of the Executive Committee. The sitting Executive Committee will decide who the new members will be, taking into consideration the proposals members present to REDAN, which should correspond to the principles established in these by-laws, using the mechanisms this committee agrees upon. Moreover, the sitting committee will take responsibility for designing an annual work plan and designate the pertinent commissions to carry out the specific activities put forward in said plan. Members of the Executive Committee and other commissions will be eligible to hold the same office up to three non-consecutive times.
-
Annual work plan
The Executive Committee will make an annual work plan presenting the activities REDAN will participate in, including the organization and realization of the Biannual Congress for Research on North America. The plan will include the names of the commissions in charge of developing educational, scientific, and cultural activities, as well as the strategies to strengthen the participation of all REDAN members through institutional and individual memberships; finally, it will promote academic exchange to work on joint publications. To promote the participation of all REDAN members, the Executive Committee may define mechanisms that comply with the principles stated in these by-laws, appoint specific commissions to carry out certain activities, and designate collegiate and executive bodies to ensure the academic quality of said activities.
-
Structure
Executive Committee and network commission decisions will be collegiate, inclusive, and made horizontally. To participate in the Executive Committee, the commission, and in general, in REDAN decisions, the institutional and individual members must be registered with REDAN and comply with the prerequisites and mechanisms that the Executive Committee determines.
-
Plurality and flexibility
REDAN will welcome all perspectives and epistemological and methodological approaches, within the bounds of academic ethics, and that are regulated by researchers’ free mobility in generating and socializing knowledge.
-
Equity and non-discrimination
REDAN is based on these principles. It will treat every member fairly and impartially, without regard to prejudices based on race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Equity will guide all decisions regarding achieving the network’s objectives.
-
Transparency and confidentiality
The Executive Committee will facilitate access to the information about resolutions, procedures, or documents to active, registered members of REDAN who participate in its activities. Moreover, REDAN is committed to maintaining confidentiality regarding any documentation, information, or proposals if so requested by a member.
-
Protection of intellectual property
All copyrights for scientific, literary, artistic, or didactic work will be protected according to current international laws.
